Rich, I am not going to be able to give the thorough answer that you are seeking but I may be able to shed some light on your problem. As I understand the arrangement in the 754, power steering and the brakes are supplied from the pump in the rearend. There is a priority valve that directs the fluid to the point of use. Your 574 must be experiencing a loss of hydraulic pressure intermittently. During these periods is when the tractor is difficult to steer. The metal that you saw in the filter most likely came from the hydraulic pump and the pressure is starting to fail. Does the lift and brakes still work properly? High temperature with the hydraulic oil could also reduce the pressure. Have you cleaned the oil cooler that is mounted in front of the radiator? Are you using HyTran oil? Sorry that I could not be of more help.
