You need to take them apart. There is probably a lot of brake dust. Couple of possible problems - there is a roller ball in them as part of the mechanism that can get dirty or rusted and won't roll. Could have one or more broken springs. I would take them a part, clean everything and when I put mine back together I put sone antisize on the balls. Parts are available.
