I don't know about the blackening as it takes 30 or more hours after a change to see significant change in mine. Are the rubbers in the air delivery system in good condition (not cracked) and clamps are tight? No potential holes any place? My 986 breathes noticeably but I have not seen any problems develop relative to it. Like the other fellow said you want to be checking that oil on a daily basis. My 986 has been a good strong tractor and now is in the neighborhood of 4650 hours. Need to replace the park pawl in the next few months.
