Did the engine run OK after warming up 5 minutes? If so the problem could be as simple as stale gas in the carb bowl.
The "reformulated" gas we're forced to buy now contains 10%+ ethanol. It works OK in fuel injected engines. But it deteriorates (become less volatile and absorbs water) quickly - even when treated with Stabil, etc. This causes starting/running problems in carbureted engines - especially if an engine sits idle for several weeks.
Solution is to keep fresh gas in the tank. Also when finished with the tractor shut off the fuel at the sediment bowl and let the engine run until it quits before shutting of the ignition This way no fuel is left in the carb bowl. Now you next time start it, the carb bowl will be filled with fresher fuel direct from the tank.
Another possibility - if the humidity was high when it gave you trouble - is carburetor icing. Solution is to thoroughly warm the engine before putting it to work. Also covering the radiator then shielding between the radiator and carburetor so warm air from the radiator flows back over the carb helps.

That was 10 years before I was born, so I grew up thinking that 8N was the world's best tractor. Grandpa had greenhouses, with over half an acre under glass, and that 8N did almost everything. It was the only
