It depends on the condition the starter is in now. I haven't had a starter fail as a direct result of 12v. Usually mine wouldn't turn over on 6v but would with 12v. I could tell they were in poor shape.
Keep the tractor tuned good and easy starting. Don't crank it too long and get the starter hot. When it's time to have the starter rebuilt I have a clutch type drive installed and eliminate the spring type bendix. It won't hit quite so hard.
