Weld repairs on heat treated steel gears is not adviseable. Gears are hardened to a specified depth (carburized) while the center areas remain relatively ductile and soft. Welding up the pit would destroy the hardness properties of the tooth. Also, during welding a thin layer of fine grained and very hard martensite is formed at the bottom of the weld heat affected zone. Tractor operation may create stresses high enough to cause a crack in this layer of martinsite. Get another bull gear for your M, use the old one for a boat anchor.
