Did you check the manifold really good? It sounds incredible that the butterfly could make it into the cylinder so easily without hanging up on something. And not causing the engine to miss because of a hung valve. Most butterflys I've seen are too big for this trip. The screws maybe. Don't know what brass screws would do inside a cylinder. I'd really recheck the manifold.
