The only thing I would do differently is to get an air operated engine cleaning gun using diesel as a cleaning fluid. With the top off use the gun to clean everything off and the button up and fill with diesel to operating level. Run it around at a very low throttle setting going through the gears. After a good drain put the tranny oil in. Use the tractor moderately for a few weeks and do another drain. Check for any fillings then. If none you should be good to go.
i will confess that my 300u had a couple of pints in the rear differential when I got it. I drained down to thick oil so i will be doing the same procedure in the spring.
I think anyone who leaves these 300u's outside has to keep an eye on this. I think it is the top plate that leaks if it is not sealed well. It has a steel shift lever cover so I do not believe that is the issue.

What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?").
