After removing the nut it should come out easy ive never had a problem. Noise in the rear end is common to these tractors. Biggest fix to quiet down has been replacing the input bearing on the tranny when replacing the seal in that area. To remove the diff shaft on the left side you need to unbolt at the tranny and pull the whole assy. After its off the tractor you can remove the brake drum then remove the plate on the final drive and the shaft will come out thru the hole then you can replace the seals.Just remember the shaft goes out thru the plate on the final drive. The rite side drum is on the outer end of the shaft and also needs to be removed to remove the diff shaft. Sometimes those brake drums are hard to remove just last week i had to torch one to remove from the shaft as i replaced all seals. Ive done the procedure many times and twice ran into the problem of cutting the brake drum no fun.
