Thanks to all the great advice here, I finally got My H converted to 12 volts. I used a Hitachi alternator and have about 1/2" of clearance under the hood (The delco simply wouldn't fit). I had already purchased a converstion mounting bracket so just used that, although I could have just drilled out the original. The diode is soldered to the red wire coming off the resistor mounted to the coil. The diode is triple shrink wrapped for rigidity as Bob suggested. The fusable link is the thick green wire. My parts store didn't rate the links by amps, so it was suggested to me that 14guage was the approporiate site fusable link.
