I had the same problem and had resolved that I was not going to get any more power from the engine. One thing that I did not try was to remove the fan and put an electric fan in its place. I concluded that eventhough the lo-boy was the most enjoyable tractor that I had mowed with, I would park it due to poor performance in taller grass. Eventually, I loaned the tractor for about a year. The man that borrowed it later bought one for himself and returned mine. Since I was unable to increase the power of the engine I decided to see if I could improve the cutting by other means. I modified the deck to where cut grass could be discharged easier and I experimented with sharpening the blades. This only modestly helped. Later I examined how the deck angle and the blades met the ground and I determined that the blades were having to cut the grass multiple times and that was loading the engine. I altered the two main support brackets and tilted the deck with the front about a half bubble low on a carpenters level at mowing height. This made a tremendous difference as the leading edge of the sharp blades cut the grass and the blades then cleared the height of the grass as they pass over the cut area without the drag or second cut that was previously occuring when the deck had a rearward tilt. I suggest that you examine your mower deck to see if it has a similar design as mine had originally, and if so, make the modification.
