It's pretty impressive what a really good M will do! I've got a '49 that my Dad bought used in '52. At the time he couldn't get a new one because of production problems which may have been related to the Korean War. Anyway, since he needed the tractor, and a new one wasn't readily available at the local dealership, he took the used one on the condition that it be completely overhauled by their ace mechanic and come with a new warranty. The tractor was everything promised, and more. Over the years it was worked hard, but was always maintained well. It ended up with M&W sleeves and pistons, a Thompson governor, and the governor opened up to let it run about 2100 rpm. The thing was (and still is!) a BEAST. I've run it over lots of acres with a 4-14 Moline trailing plow, and later with a 3-16 JD mounted plow. It has more hp than traction, even with 2 sets of wheel weights. The last time it was on a Dyno was several years ago, and it tested 52hp. I've driven lots of other Farmalls of similar vintage, and only a couple that I thought compared to it in raw power or "personality." I've NEVER driven anything else that was much pure fun under load! I have no problem believing you have an M that will outwork a 504, and work closely with a 656. I've seen this one pull the same loads easier and faster than a good 560, and I've worked it in the same field with a neighbor's 806 and 766 both disking and plowing. It doesn't have the raw power or refinements of either of those tractors, but at the end of the day, it's accomplished far more work than a comparison of "hp numbers" would indicate.

Today's Featured Article - The Cletrac General GG and the BF Avery A - A Bit of History - by Mike Ballash. This article is a summary of what I have gathered up from various sources on the Gletrac General GG and the B. F. Avery model A tractors. I am quite sure that most of it is accurate. The General GG was made by the Cleveland Tractor Company (Cletrac) of Cleveland, Ohio. Originally the company was called the Cleveland Motor Plow Company which began in 1912, then the Cleveland Tractor Company (1917) and finally Cletrac. ... [Read Article]
