Yes, should be fairly easy to do split in front of Transmission. I've not done and A, but did do my C that way to replace the front transmission seals. I supported the front and rolled the rear part back. On the C, the rear was nearly balanced, so it did not take much to support it. Since you have an A and not a super, you don't have to worry with the hydraulics. With the C and the supers, you have to remove the hydraulic manifold to split at the clutch which is a pain. I don't recall having much trouble getting the shaft back in the clutch when I split at the transmission on my C. Just be sure to that the clutch is not disengaged during the split so you don't have to line the clutch up. I used long bolts at the split point to guide things back together and put the PTO in gear so I could turn the shaft with the PTO to help in getting it back in the clutch.
