That is an anti fouling adapter that puts the spark plug farther away from the oil splatter, and (unfortunately) the combustion process. It is an attempt to keep a cylinder from going dead. Put in new d-18 champs (or equal) and leave that out. If it fouls the plug either repair the engine or use the adapter. Jim
