The starter motor spinning without cranking the engine and not making a grinding noise is caused by the drive not sliding out on the helix splines. Either the splines are damaged or there is grease on them. When the starter is engaged it depends on the inertia of the drive resisting beginning to spin to get it to move out on the helix to engage the flywheel before it begins to spin with the armature. A lubricant that is too stiff will cause the drive to spin with the armature before it engages the ring gear teeth. In your case though, as long as you can get it to work with a few raps of a hammer I would look more to drive sticking in the retracted position rather than a lubrication problem.
