The gear motion is not normal. There could be a bad bearing or bearing retainer on that front shaft. The jumping out is a combination of slightly worn shifter forks, rounded off splines on the input shaft, and mating splines on the 4th-5th slider, and possible weak springs.rust damage on the detent ball in the rails. New replacement gear and front shaft can be had (or good used). The reason they eventually go out is the grinding into fifth from forth when on the road (remember it is more than 50 yrs old!)
