Your description of leaking between the block and bellhousing is interesting.
Here's a pick of what's back there. There is a gasket between the block and bell housing. The center red ring is the main seal retainer. The rear cam bearing also penetrates the block and is sealed by the gasket between the block/bell. All splash lubed, so its usually the felt main.
