Hi Traig, I'm also new at this, having purchased an SC in March. I have it torn down and will begin reassembly once the parts to repair the touch control pump arrive. I don't post often, but this site has some great people and excellent advice. If your FIL's tractor is indeed a 48, then it would be a C since the SC first appeared in 1951. Another way to tell the difference is by the grille. The SC, in addition to having a water pump, also had a larger (taller) radiator. To accomodate this radiator, the middle section of the grille was made taller. On an SC, the distance between the bottom of the lowest grille slit and the seam where it joins the bottom section is right at 2". On a C, that distance is only about 1/2". I've also heard that some owners had water pumps added to their C's, but I'd bet that very few went through the trouble and extra expense to also add the larger radiator and grille. Have fun with the tractor.....
