Most distributor caps are vented, the hole is NORMAL.
As far as a little oil, it may have simple been overgreased a bit and/or the grease in the gear area can turn to oil after 50 or 60 years. It's POSSIBLE the oil seal ahead of the drive gear has failed, but there's not much oil in the drive area anyhow.
Also, especially in newer stuff without all the drive mechanism ahead of the distributor, oil in the distributor can be a sign of excessive engine blowby or a restricted crankcase ventilation system. I DOUBT that's a problem on your's, though.
Simply wipe it clean and you're good to go.
If you want to do a more thorough cleaning, you can remove the breaker plate, then clean it out with brake cleaner. Then, after it's clean and the brake cleaner has evaporated, lube the centrifugal advance mechanism before putting it back together.
