Challenge will be in control rods/cable, radiator connection, hood holes, and mounts. If you stay with an IH engine, there will be lots of used parts available to make it work. 544 Farmall should be same tractor: it used a c-200 gas engine and a D-239 diesel. the c-200 is a sawed off c-301. The d-239 is a German and as long as you have the Farmall 544 timing cover and rear plate, you could put almost any 3-4-6-cylinder Neuss in there you'd want, all the way through the caseih 95 series. the International 544 is different (no frame rails). a 664 would be a suitable donor (but rare) as it's really a 656 utility (with frame rails) with the d-239. Gotvalds in Hillman MN had a burned one a year or 2 ago, I don't know if it's still there, but it had 666 utility written on it in crayon although it said 664 on the serial plate.
It would be cool to see a 3 cyl turbo diesel 504 :)
If you have some H parts, maybe an H engine will bolt up but I am not sure. A 504 was marketed as a newer version of a 330 or 340 which I'm told was a 350 rear with the smaller engine. If it does bolt up, and you have the cash, try to have a 350 engine or at least all the refinements you could in the H block. I've heard even a straight H was better lugging than a 504 gas. If that swap works, you'd have the Super H they should have built or the 504 gasser they should have built :)
Of course you could put a cummins, perkins, kubota, or whatever in there too. Then the fun starts with fabricating new parts. Choose an engine whose rated speed is close to the 504's so the engine will have power at the correct tractor speeds.
