governor spring selection-300U

This is my first tractor, so I didn't realize that there was anything unusual with having to allways keep my hand on the throttle lever to increase or decrease power. This morning I decided to remove the governor cover just to have a looksee. I didn't notice anything until I looked in the manual at the diagram. It seems the previous owner had put in place of the gov. spring, a solid metal rod (approx 2x coathanger thickness). Its a great fix if you don't have a spare spring handy. My parts book shows about 6 million choices. I would like to know how to choose the correct spring. Is there only one for my model or are there different ones depending on what torque/rpm characteristics I may desire. If I do have choices, what are the stats on loose and tight springs. Any info would be appreciated. Paul Vance
