I agree wit rustred. My guess is starter not engaging ring gear, worse case is teeth stripped off ring gear right where the start is at now.
Any way you can coast/pull start it, or at least pull it a few feet to advance the ring gear, perhaps the start will grab then? That will prove if it's the ring gear or starter.
