If you take the starter out, you will be looking in at the ring gear (in the hole). if it has been made unusable there will be less than 60% of the tooth length remaining. The stripping sound is likely the starter drive gnashing teeth with that gear. The engine only stops in two places when it is shut off, and as a result those places get the most wear. If it has no history of the noise, it is 80% likely to be OK with a new starter drive, (New style with no big spring). Putting brushes in it, and new bushings is a good idea. Jim
