Cub Engine Noise

I recently acquired a '58 Cub. The hour meter says 850+/- hours. Starts right-up and runs well, however there is a tap in the engine (more like a knock but not an ignition knock). Idles smoothly and the tap/knock is most pronounced at high RPM. I pulled the valve cover off...nothing seemed amiss. Oil is new and pressure is good. Plenty of power. The tap/knock seems to dissapear when going down-hill (high vaccuum?) Perhaps it's a valve seating poorly? I plan to use the Cub for mowing and don't want to invest in a mower until the engine is sound. Will running with this pose a problem? Any thoughts?
