Finally got everything apart on the MD last night. And what do I find but a really chewed up bolt in the bottom of the case which took out the constant mesh gear. Bolt size matched with one of the bolts holding on belt pulley delete plate. When I got the tractor, it had a plate made of sheet metal which I replaced with a new steel one. (I swear I did not drop anything into the transmission.) My "theory" is that since I started the tractor on a cold day, the grease was thick enough that it carried the bolt up and lodged in the gears. Does this sound feasible? The good news is, nothing else was damaged; bearings and all other gears look great. The trans. lube had no metal in it. Just thought everyone would like to know. The failure was manmade, not mechanical.
