If you were pulling a disk in 3rd and pushed in the clutch it would take 3 seconds to disengage, or would it just plain stop in its tracks. I bet stop. The flywheel effect of the driven disk will keep it turning for several seconds when the clutch is pushed in, Normal. Just wait. If when it is pushed in and shifted to neutral then to another gear it should not grind If it does the clutch plate is dragging on the FW or PP gummy splines or a warped disk can cause that (or a dry pilot bearing.
