M regulator

have rebuilt starter and in process of having generator rebuilt. have had charging problems. on two diagrams i have, one regulator has 3 posts(field, battery and generator), other has 4 posts(field, battery, gen and L). Which is the correct regulator? Was told by local store that the four post is correct. the three post has the same light switch has my tractor. Just starting into this stuff and fumbling my way through, therefore the KISS method should be employed when replying. Please
