Remove the old packing by using a small, pointed object such as a small screwdriver, and just dig the old packing out. It will crumble into tiny pieces. Be sure to get ALL of it out.
NEVER, I repeat NEVER tap the needle into the seat, and NEVER polish that needle with emery cloth or anything else. Doing so will cause problems with how it fits, and it WILL cause problems.
DO spray the needle AND the seat with carb cleaner, blow them dry, and then spray a tiny amount of silicon lubricant on the needle and inside the seat.
