I have serial number 1482 Farmall A and it has the starter option on it. In other words, the mounting hole, but no starter. It's a crank start.
Now this is one of the first 1000 built, so I think things were in a state of flux, meaning, things were changing all the time.
I had someone tell me that mine wasn't that old. However, the engine block serial number and the serial number plate located on the pan that wraps around under the pedals have the same serial number. I believe mine is a true 1939. The guy that told me that was one of those smart -a.. kinds of guys anyway. He hauled a piece of paper out of his wallet to show me the serial numbers. I already knew the serial numbers, so do I need his help?

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
