The lateral movement is what you should expect and , as you know, nothing to be concerned about. If the bearings are bad, depending on how bad, you MAY not have a damaged crank...yet. They can be replaced now, if the crank it clean and still round...truly round. This job calls for careful measurements. My 1963 Cub with a 1949 engine shows early symptoms of the same thing. I hope to check it out after I recover from yesterday's mower accident that will have me out of commission for a while...without the use of my left hand.
