Out of curiosity I searched the web for a W6 starter or drive housing. Found a lot of wrong info from suppliers that say they fit a w6 but no starter or parts. Did find a rebuilt listed in a old book for the W6 starter # 1107444 at Valubuilt tractor parts, don't know if there still around or not. The starter you need fits regular 6 series tractors and SW6 serials # 501 to 3950. Super starters after 3950 will bolt on but as you found out they won't mesh right. You can use a diesel starter from a W6, MD and stage 1 SMD on that tractor if you just want something to work and are going to use 12 volts.
