M HEAD Numbers

My M is a 42. I'm having to replace the sleeves and pistons. Went to the machine shop to get my head back and they found lots of cracks in it. So I'm looking for a head. I recall a post that give some numbers as to which heads were good and which one were no so great. I looked around in the archives but diden't have any luck. The head I have has 8574 D B stamped just to the right of the temp gage sender. Is this the number location? Second thing is I need new sleeves and pistons is there any reason NOT to go with the Firecrater pistons? And if so does that change which head a guy uses.
