Jeff, I believe you have dirt in your carborator that is holding your float valve open. Check your gas tank,and sediment bowl and make sure that they are clean. Fine pieces of rust is enough to keep the valve from shutting off and then overflow the carborator causing the gas to leak out the bottom of the carborator. Since your not getting enough gas when the tractor is runnung it will cause the backfiring.
