One part of your post has me a little confused. you state that you bought a 12V coil .
If you have a true 12V coil with a 3 ohm primary winding, then you do not need the ceramic block ballast resistor. If your new coil is marked "12V with external ballast resistor", it has a 1.5 ohm primary winding, then you do need the ceramic ballast resistor. You need to determine which coil type you have before installing a ballast resistor, or not.
