If the tractor has a TA, there should be a lever next to your left leg as you sit on the seat. It acts like a 2-speed powershift. Pull it back and the tractor shifts down a gear.
Sometimes a previous owner has problems with the TA and removes just the lever so he is not tempted to try it. In that case the way to know if there's a TA in the tractor is to look at the linkages on the left side, running from the clutch pedal.
A non-TA tractor will have one rod going to a single lever on the side of the tractor.
A TA tractor will have a second lever and extra linkage connecting the two levers together.
To make the TA tractor shift easily, BOTH levers must move when you push the clutch pedal.
