We had a new 42 H during WW2. It was bought in April. It had the big oil filter and I remenber as a kid that the element looked like it had a white sock over it. When changed, they were usually put in a bin along the tractor barn wall.I think IH stopped using the big filter for mo. or so after our tractor was built (#99something). almost 100,000 serial # and went to the small one and then went back to the big one for a while . mayby 2 or 3 mo. prodution. THEN they started using short one from then on. All this was mayby to save money during war. -- 1939M came with big 4 1/2" wide canister about 5 " tall. It, like someone above said, was changed about end of 1940 to tall canister,{same size as early H}. Incidently, New 1941 M Deisal used this old big canister for years. One note, our 42 H had a namplate made of steel and painted gray with black letters. U.S. had more steel than alluminum then [need for Planes].Sorry for long answer.
