My SA was built in early '49. First time I had to take the head off, I went into the dealer for a new head gasket. He asked me if it had a water pump or not. I said "no" and he brought out a different gasket than I took off. Turns out the gasket for my engine had larger water passage holes so there was no resistance to the thermal flow. The gasket for the water pump type engine had small passage holes, to give the pump some resistance I guess. Who ever had this tractor before I got it put in the wrong the wrong gasket. I put the correct one in with the larger holes, and noticed that it did run cooler. You will see two part #'s in the part book. If you use the water pump, you need the head gasket with the smaller holes.

The General GG was made by the Cleveland Tractor Company (Cletrac) of Cleveland, Ohio. Originally the company was called the Cleveland Motor Plow Company which began in 1912, then the Cleveland Tractor Company (1917) and finally Cletrac. ... [Read Article]
