The S/N plate should be under the seat on the seat support closest to the torque tube. There are S/N's on the tractor and engine, casting codes on major castings and part numbers on lots of parts.
Get a copy of Guy Fay's IH Tractor Data Book from Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble for about $10. It explains all the numbers in a clear fashion and tells what each one means. It also has all the specs on IH tractors from the '20s through about 1960 or so. Well worth the money!
