I wouldn't be too hard on the cousin as it is a pretty common occurance. The shift lever end gets worn and the pivot points wear so it can jump out of the slots in the rails. Just take the welch plugs out if they are still in( use a sharp punch to collapse one and dig it out, then push pin out . Look down inside and align the notches in shift rails. You can pick up new welch plugs at most any auto supply store. If you want to repair the lever and pivots that is another story. If you shift carefully you probably won't have any trouble as apparently you haven't previously.
