The generator is most likely only rated to produce slightly over 6 volts, therefore it may not be charging the battery completely.

I wouldn't count on the readings from the in-dash ammeter. Put a voltage tester on the battery terminals with the tractor off. You should read at or slightly above the battery voltage. With the tractor started, the generator would normally be charging, therefore the voltage should be higher. If not, check the voltage regulator.

The generator can be rewired by a shop for little money if it is defective. Send the regulator along with it...that way they can test the entire system.
