Nick, I'm no authority on tractors like the others (to whom I respectfully doff my cover) and I can only tell you what's worked for me. I've been running AVGAS (100 octane, leaded aviation gas) that I get from a buddy who runs an airport. My M has been running it for almost a year now and just seems to love the stuff. I like that the 100 octane low lead has lead in it and has preservatives so when the tractor lays up, the gas never goes bad. Since I've been running AVGAS, I've never seen any junk in the fuel bowl, nor has my tractor failed to start with only a quick tap on the starter pedal -- even in the sub-zero temps last winter. Like the others said, it is expensive (I get a substantial discount from my buddy, but it's still about $2/gallon) -- but this is my FARMALL we're talking about. My family lives under a bridge abutment, but by golly, nothin's too good for my M which does far more useful stuff than some Cessna putzing around the sky smashing into bugs.
