The 8 volt battery will not do any starter damage. Most likely the only reason it is not showing charge is that whoever changed to the 8 volt battery didn't re-adjust the voltage regulator so it will put out a charging voltage higher than the 8 volt battery voltage. I have had an 8 volt battery in my 49 Chevrolet pickup for MANY years and it works fine, however the voltage regulator was adjusted upward from where it was for the 6 volt battery. Actually you can use a 12 volt battery in a "jump start" situation on a 6 volt starter and it won't hurt the starter one bit but it really spins the engine over. Just don't turn on any lights or other accessories while the 12 volt battery is connected for starting!
