Hydraulics? If yes that sounds like a real good deal. It could smoke on start up for a long long time before you had to worry about it.
It might also clear up if you put in a good high detergent oil. I've had excellent luck running Mobil 1 in old lawnmowers. I think if you don't change the oil often enough the rings gum up. Mobil 1 and running it good and hard seems to free up those stuck rings. I had one old mower that we thought was totally dead. I got it running one last time (jump started from the truck directly to the starter) and switched it to Mobil 1 then commenced to mowing. It just kept running better and better. When I refueled it was still difficult to restart but not anywhere near as bad. After a good hard day mowing I changed the oil again, the next day it started without too much fuss and after that day it ran great and started easy. We ran it 2 more summers before the transmission finally gave up.
