The word Priming is a general term meaning putting a task or machine in a condition that sets the stage for action. Priming a pump (this case) is filling it with working fluid so that it draws new fluid in and pushes fluid out into the working valves. Priming for paint is putting on a layer of paint (primer) that adheres to the base material better, or more tenaciously, than the finish coat, and helps the finish coat adhere to it. Priming a shot shell puts a new ignitor into the brass of the empty casing to allow eventual firing. Hopefully this makes sense! I smile, Jim
