I would check the CCA's on the 6v and compare it to the CCA on the 8v battery. I have an IH 300U which is the same engine that's in your Farnmall 300, and in the winter here in upstate NY, a single 6v cannot keep starting this tractor. I finally put in a second 6v battery, in parallel, and mounted it in the tool box behind the seat. O guage wire, and now it will start in the winter on any day. My advise is to go with what works for your location, weather and needs. Yes, 6v bulbs will burn out quicker on 8 volts, small price to pay for your tractor to start easy.
