Sarge - If you wired it up per the diagram and the motor runs on when you shut off the ignition switch, the warning lamp has too high a current rating. Replace it with a 12 volt lamp rated at 150 to 200 milliamps. Most auto side marker and instrument panel lamps fall in this range and will work fine. (Examples: #164, #192, #1815) The non-functioning ammeter probably has a stuck needle. Happens sometimes to ammeters when a little water gets inside 'em. Only fix is to replace the ammeter.
