300U hydraulics, losing prime

The hydraulics on my 300U seem to be losing prime (suction). I can start the tractor, and if I have no hydraulics, I can shoot some air into the reservoir and the pump primes and the hydraulics work, for a while. I get maybe 10 minutes out of this, then no pressure. I have torn apart the regulator/safety valve and everything looks great, but I could not get the steering safety valve out to inspect it, but I doubt that is the problem. I also recently put helicoils in the stripped threads of the pump, so I don't think it's pulling air thru there. Every time I have lost pressure, it has been with the PTO engaged, but I think that is just coincidence. I'm about ready to hook a compressor up to it full time and pressurise the reservoir just to cure this. Okay, I'm not serious about that compressor idea, but this situation has me flummoxed. Any ideas?
