Could be wrong, but I think bearings were the source of the problem in the early 560. Didn't take long to find problems when they were pulling a 5-14 or 5-16 plow. If the bearings let go, there could also be significant gear damage. I don't know how much 560 stuff will swap to your 400, but I know the last time we had the rear ends of our M and SM reworked, the IH dealership swapped in some 560 bearings. That was in the early 1960s, and they were worked hard until the late 1980s. Both of those tractors spent many hours pulling 4-14 plows. Not working hard today, but still no problems.
