Bob, I had never heard of an 8V battery either until a friend got one to put in a Jeep about 30 years ago. Charge with a 6V charger. None of the lamps need to be changed. It will spin the starter a lot faster than the 6V battery. Be sure all of the connections are clean and tight. Be sure to use 2Ga or heavier battery cables and not the little 12V cables. If the generator is good it will charge the battery. If it doesen't charge, check the cutout relay and wiring, then have the generator checked at a generator/starter shop (one run by an older guy will be knowledgeable on the 8V needs) to be sure it's working right.
