Ray if you have an original generator, it can be converted to 12 volt by any good alternator/generator shop. You can still buy 12 volt Delco Remy voltage regulators that are similar to the 6. You can get the generator mounted style or the regular style if your regulator is on the rear gas tank support. I have converted three 6 volt generators and regulators. Cost is around $125 give or take which includes a new 12 volt regulator. You will need a resistor in the coil line to drop the voltage down to around 7. NAPA part 13 ICR. That resistor is a ceramic assembly about 2 1/2 inches long, with a mounting hole. It can be mounted on the steering post that holds the oil and water gauges. That keeps it out of the weather. Don't forget 12 volt light bulbs. Starter will be fine. It will simply crank faster.
